UCP Orientation

All students must attend the mandatory orientation program provided by the Global Education Office and Universidade Católica Portuguesa, offered at the beginning of their study abroad term. This program is a great way to integrate into student life and includes:Vespas parked in front of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon, Portugal.

  • Airport pick-up on select days/times and drop-off at program housing
  • A welcome meal
  • A practical neighborhood tour, where you will learn where to buy groceries, find the nearest ATM, and locate transportation stops
  • A campus tour
  • Orientation sessions designed to provide you with the academic and practical information you need to succeed during your term abroad

Throughout your time in Lisbon, the host university may also provide additional social and cultural activities. Previous examples have included a group surfing class as a team building activity, a Thanksgiving dinner (fall only), and a farewell gathering.

Many classes offered at UCP also use Lisbon as a "living lab" to illustrate themes discussed in lectures. Students are also encouraged to participate in university activities, student organizations, and sports, and will have access to the library and computing facilities, along with international student organizations and social events to help you immerse in the culture. Throughout the year, there are a number of holidays and festivals to enhance your experience.

  • Discover fresh, local produce and artisanal products at the Mercado da Ribeira.
  • Take a walking tour of Lisbon’s urban art scene, including vibrant murals and street tiles.
  • Tour the city by riding one of Lisbon’s iconic trams.
  • Attend a Fado folk music show and then learn more about this cultural legacy in the Museu do Fado.
  • Taste Portugal’s quintessential pastry, the Pastel de Nata.
  • Take a stroll along the nearby sandy beaches.
  • Discover both ancient and contemporary art collections at several museums across the city.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the city from the Elevador de Santa Justa.
  • Explore waterfront Belém - a historic neighborhood featuring important monuments, museums, and the popular Portuguese tart shop, the Pastéis de Belém.
  • Take a boat tour and discover Lisbon from the water.
  • Join a student organization to meet local students (semester only).
  • Participate in one of many cultural and religious festivals held throughout the year, including Restoration of Independence Day (December), Carnival (February/March), Feast of Corpus Christi (May/June), and Portugal Day (June).
