Alentejo is a geographical region in south-central Portugal whose name means “beyond the Tagus river.” Commonly known as the “breadbasket of Portugal,” the Alentejo region is known for its agricultural products – cheeses, wines, smoked meats, olive oil, and more. It also includes neolithic structures and several museums and cultural centers.
The city of Évora boasts more than 2,000 years of history and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its world-renowned architectural wonders include an ancient Roman temple and aqueduct, a massive Gothic cathedral, and a baroque church that features a skeleton-adorned Chapel of Bones.
As the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon, Porto offers historic monuments, fine art museums, and stunning coastlines. The city is perhaps most well-known for its characteristic azulejo tiles, its brightly colored houses, and its world-famous export – port wine.
