STEM-Focused Specialty Programs
One of the biggest myths we hear about study abroad is “I can’t study abroad with my major” — especially from STEM students. It’s not true. USAC has a program for every student who wants to go abroad. Start planning early and check in with your academic advisor about the courses you need to take, and explore the hundreds of course offerings available throughout the world.
USAC’s specialty programs are led by on-site USAC-appointed Resident Directors, staff, and faculty. These programs offer a hands-on curriculum designed by our nonprofit, and most classes are with other USAC students. Whether you’re planning to study abroad for a full academic year or are signing up for a jam-packed summer, here are some common trends in our academic ares by program location.
Biology and Natural Resources in Costa Rica or Uruguay
Latin America is becoming a hotspot for students who are interested in living in a Spanish-speaking country but aren’t keen on Europe. There are study abroad programs designed for science majors interested in learning more about health, ecology, and conservation biology in Costa Rica while also practicing their language skills and immersing in the Tico lifestyle.
Engineering in Spain
You’ll be able to knock out some engineering requirements during your study abroad in Spain. Mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, and chemistry are most often available in the Valencia program. Classes are held in one of Spain’s most cosmopolitan cities on the Mediterranean Coast which is known for offering a ton of amenities and things to do.
Health Sciences in Thailand
Health majors must develop unique human communication skills — like interpersonal communication, empathy, and adaptability — to thrive in their careers, and international experience will give you expert-level practice. Located in the heart of Thailand’s northeast region, Khon Kaen is a large city that is tucked away from tourist-heavy crossroads. Working with local communities, the Khon Kaen program gives students insight into traditional Thai medicine, culture, and the largest center of healthcare, education, and technology in the nation.
