It is also a very internationally focused institution, with approximately half of its students and teaching staff coming from outside the Netherlands, making it an ideal location to study a variety of disciplines from a European or international perspective. The university’s curriculum is strongly informed by its groundbreaking research activity, which is characterized by a global outlook and a wide-reaching network of research collaborations.

The university is also well-known for incorporating Problem-Based Learning (PBL) into its curriculum. PBL is a small-scale educational system in which students take an active role in their own learning process: by discussing and solving cases, by applying course content to real-world challenges, and by engaging in independent or group research. PBL often uses smaller class sizes, which provides students with more individualized attention and support.

Maastricht University has a decentralized, urban campus that is integrated into the city itself. Many courses are held in historical buildings in the oldest part of the city; others are held on the Randwyck Health Campus, located within biking distance across the River Meuse. You can walk, bike, or take public transportation to travel between your housing, class meetings, and campus events, allowing you to immerse yourself within your host city and experience day-to-day life as a local.

The university’s Center for European Studies incorporates additional hands-on experiences into its course offerings, facilitating even more travel within and around the local area—be prepared to discuss sustainable business challenges with local entrepreneurs, attend a lecture on Dutch artwork in a local museum, or visit the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss current political topics.
