Activities and Field Trips for Kookmin University
Semester
Orientation
At the beginning of each semester, orientation serves as a good opportunity for international students to accustom to their new lives at KMU. You can also learn more about the clubs and other on-campus co-curricular opportunities available to you.
Festivals and Other Campus Events
Diverse events and meetings for international students are organized each semester. One fall tradition is an athletic meeting/field day; in the spring there is a BBQ party. In addition, diverse social programs are arranged by each department to support engagement with local students.
Kookmin has more than 70 clubs to choose from and a variety of outlets for artistic activities, including exhibitions, music, dance, and drama performances. The Kookmin Art Center has a gallery, film studio, two theatres, and three dance studios. A concert hall hosts music concerts and other performances and lectures throughout the year.
Each spring, the General Students Association holds a big festival called Daedongje. Held every May, the festival period includes club introduction ceremonies, exhibitions, singing contests, dance competitions, and more. These events are arranged by individual clubs to promote themselves so that students can have a good time and be exposed to different aspects of campus life.
Some campus activities including kimchi-making and international day. Volunteer opportunities are also available.
Global Peers Program
Kookmin University has organized this program to promote interaction between international students and Kookmin students. It is designed to help international students adjust to their new environment and to learn/experience Korean culture by encountering it firsthand from their buddies. Likewise, we encourage our students to introduce and share their culture and lifestyle with their Korean buddies—broadening the world view for both. Matches with buddies will be made prior to arrival.
Field trips
Organized field trips (free or small charge to cover costs) are held throughout the year.
Summer
Cultural Experiences
KMU has designed immersive cultural experiences to help you learn and discover Korean culture during your summer program while earning college credit. Examples of past experiences include: Korean tea ceremony, kimchi making, visit to Gyeongbokgung Royal Palace, K-Pop, visit to National Hangeul Museum, and Lotte World.
Completion Ceremony
Upon the conclusion of your program, you will be awarded a completion certificate. This will be a special time to say farewell to your instructors and new friends.
One-Day Cultural Experience Field Trip
This all-day field trip, included in your program fee, takes you to Nami Island or a visit to a Korean folk village.
Namiseom Island is a half-moon-shaped isle and is famous for its beautiful tree lined roads. “Nami” island, as it’s known, was designated a UNICEF Child Friendly Park. This was a first for Korea and only the 14th park in the world to receive such a designation.
When visiting the Korean folk village, you will be able to watch intriguing cultural performances such as nongak (farmer’s music), martial arts on horseback, and traditional ceremonies. Students can enjoy traditional rice cakes like songpyeon, injeolmi, bueko-gui, or pageon.
