Activities for Lüneburg, Germany

USAC students are encouraged to participate in the extracurricular activities such as theatre visits, Stammtisch (monthly conversation gatherings with German and international students), day trips, and sport activities will be organized by the Leuphana University Lüneburg international office and the international student organization.

USAC staff invites USAC students and occasionally guests to meet for “Coffee, Cake, and Culture” to share experiences and help understand and reflect on them. The activities available will vary from session to session. Students also have the opportunity to immerse themselves on campus by sitting in on a variety of courses and lectures offered; many are in German but several are in English. Topics range from Marketing and Sustainability to European Integration, including Theories of the European Integration, Fundamentals of Literature and Language Teaching Methods, Introduction to Business Administration, Marketing and Sustainability, and Innovation Management.

While enrolled as a USAC student, you will enjoy the privileges accorded local students attending Leuphana University Lüneburg. You are encouraged to participate in university activities, student clubs and organizations such as AIESEC (international club of students interested in economics), Communicate E.V. (student initiative for advertising and public relations), ESG (Protestant student community of Lüneburg), KSG (Catholic student community of Lüneburg), the Chamber Orchestra, the Big Band, the choir, biking groups, and others.

You also are encouraged to participate in local sports programs. This is a great way to meet local people with similar interests and a healthy way to stay active. There is a modest fee for access to athletic facilities. Available activities include hiking, mountain biking, golf, soccer, handball, hockey, jazz-dance, ballroom dancing, judo, tennis, gymnastics, squash, rugby, basketball, bicycling, and volleyball.

Volkshochschule

The Adult Education Center offers courses in art, drawing and painting, history of Lüneburg, philosophy, photography, pottery, theatre, women and society and other subjects. Interested USAC semester and yearlong students are encouraged to participate in these courses to acquire knowledge in a non-academic environment and to meet locals. The available subjects cannot be confirmed until after you arrive. The Resident Director will assist you in exploring these possibilities. The fees for these courses are modest, but are the responsibility of the student.

Volunteer Opportunities

The USAC staff will help semester and yearlong students contact local charities, environmental organizations, churches, and more if you choose to purse volunteer work while in Lüneburg. It's a great way to meet local people and contribute to the community. However, this is not a commitment to be made lightly. You are expected to fulfill your obligations conscientiously and must have an advanced knowledge of German to do volunteer work.
