The Commonwealth of Australia is slightly smaller in size than the 48 contiguous United States. It is the world’s smallest continent, but it's the sixth-largest country. Australia is also the driest continent and most of the population lives along the temperate Southeastern coastline. As such, it hosts both cosmopolitan cities—with a modern economy and robust culture and arts—and some of the most rugged, remote terrain in the world. Although most of Australia is semi-arid, it has a diverse range of habitats, from alpine heaths to tropical rain forests, and is recognized as one of the most biodiverse countries. Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere. February to June semester students arrive during the Australian summer when the weather is hot. The weather will increasingly become more variable and cooler. July to November semester students begin in winter (which is mild) and study through spring until the beginning of summer.
