Uruguay positions itself as the #1 business and innovation hub in Latin America and a gateway to the region. It also consistently ranks #1 in Latin America in all international indexes related to democracy, low corruption, respect for regulations, transparency, civil liberties, and social mobility. Uruguay is a country with a strong respect for the rules of the game and the essential fundamentals of economic activity, and currently the only MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market) country rated above the investment grade threshold.
Montevideo (population 1.3 million) is the capital of Uruguay, the southernmost capital in South America and the biggest city in the country. The city combines a lively and relaxed (tranquilo) lifestyle and is quickly becoming a travel destination due to its thriving cultural scene including rich architecture, sandy beaches, plazas, shops, museums, and restaurants. Known as one of the “coolest” and “most chilled-out” cities, Montevideo reflects the casual attitude that Uruguayans take toward life. It has a humid subtropical climate with cool winters and warm summers.
