Course Information

San Sebastián, Spain | 2017 Summer Session II

Studying abroad can be a more meaningful and invigorating learning experience than at home—both inside and outside of the classroom. You may be more curious and alert than you usually are so use this heightened energy to enhance your studies as well as your cultural and geographical explorations. You may also encounter different teaching styles and course processes; be prepared to adapt and to learn.

Courses

You will enroll in three to six credits during Session I and in three to five credits during Session II. At least one 3-credit course is required each summer sessions. You may add one additional credit to Session I only for the Madrid Field Study. Course availability is contingent upon student interest and enrollment and is subject to change.

Spanish Language Studies

Summer language courses are intensive, with three to five credits of Spanish taught each session. Language courses have a maximum enrollment of 15 students each. Spanish Conversation and Oral Skills I or II is highly recommended to compliment Intermediate Spanish I through Advanced Spanish II.

European and Cultural Studies

These elective courses are designed to familiarize you with the region and provide a multi-disciplinary perspective to your studies. Courses are taught in English unless otherwise noted in Spanish; most courses taught in Spanish are appropriate for students with four semesters of college Spanish and above.

Field Studies

Deepen your academic experience by turning the optional Madrid tour into a 1-credit field study by completing additional academic requirements (readings, research, written assignments, reports, etc). Students who enroll in this 1-credit course will keep a journal and answer a series of questions about the sites visited. Upon arrival in San Sebastián, the field study course will be completed with follow-up meetings with a professor and the final exam. The written work for the field study may be completed in Spanish or English.

Dr. Rebecca Som Castellano | Boise State University

Course offered:

Dr. Som Castellano (Ph.D., The Ohio State University) is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at Boise State University. Her work focuses on food and agriculture systems, gender, development and stratification. She has been awarded several national awards for her work, including a USDA National Needs Fellowship. She loves to travel, and has spent time in Southeast Asia, Europe, Latin America and Oceania.

Dr. Juni Banerjee-Stevens | California State University, Chico

Course offered:

Dr. Banerjee-Stevens (PhD, University of Minnesota) is the Clinical Director of the Counseling & Wellness Center at California State University, Chico. She utilizes mindfulness philosophies in her therapeutic work to help clients embrace radical acceptance, self-compassion, and forgiveness. In her “real life,” Dr. Banerjee-Stevens is married with three kids. Her meditation practices include playing and listening to music, writing, and crafting.

Advanced Spanish I

The objective of this class is to do a comprehensive revision of the most difficult grammatical points in Spanish. This will be presented through the use of theoretical and practical materials that permit the student to consolidate some of those complex grammatical aspects of the Spanish language that require frequent review and further development. Care will be taken, whenever possible, to focus on understanding and practicing their use in both the written and spoken forms of the language. Prerequisite: six semesters of college Spanish. Taught in Spanish.

Basque Language and Culture

Summer Session I (Anthropology, Basque; 300-level; 3 credits)

This course would touch on the history and evolution of one of the oldest languages in the world, the mythology and symbolism of the Basques, their traditions and culture. General notions of the language will be presented, explaining why this language is of such interest today to linguists and anthropologists. Basic conversational Basque skills will be studied and students will have the opportunity outside of class to interview and practice with local native speakers. (Session I)

Contemporary Spanish Art

Summer Session I (Art; 300-level; 1 credit)

Without a doubt, Picasso is one of the most important figures in Western Art of the twentieth century, yet many other Spanish artists belong to this elite group. In this course, we will study Picasso, Juan Gris, Miró, Dalí, Antonio López, Eduardo Chillida and other outstanding Spanish painters and sculptors, as we observe Spain's artistic evolution through Cubism, Dadaism, Futurism, Surrealism, Abstract Painting and Avant-Gardes tendencies. Spain's important contribution to twentieth century art will be reviewed and debated. Taught in Spanish. (Session I)

Introduction to the language through the development of language skills and through structural analysis. Gender, Food, and Society

Summer Session I (Sociology, Women's Studies / Gender Studies; 300-level; 3 credits)

While food is essential to life, it is never simply about nutrition. Because it is fundamental to the human experience, food is a medium for the expression of culture and social identity. This course investigates the intersection of food, gender and society, examining the ways in which gender shapes everyday experiences with food. Drawing from sociological and feminist theory, we will pay special attention to gender in the food system in three realms: the corporeal, the material and the socio-cultural. This course will focus both on review of academic literature, as well as examination and reflection on local practices related to gender and food.

Intermediate Spanish I

Summer Session I (Spanish; 200-level; 3 credits)
Summer Session II (Spanish; 200-level; 3 credits)

This course emphasizes learning the structure of the Spanish language. Classes are divided into three components: grammar/vocabulary, conversation and reading/writing, each of which is related to the themes covered. A review of basic elements, such as the present tense, ser and estar, preterit and imperfect, etc. is included. Prerequisite: two semesters of college Spanish.

Intermediate Spanish II

Summer Session II (Spanish; 200-level; 3 credits)

This class continues the learning of the structure of the Spanish language. Classes are divided into three components: grammar/vocabulary, conversation and reading/writing, each of which is related to the themes covered. This level is specifically orientated towards functional and social communication, oral as well as written. Prerequisite: three semesters of college Spanish.

Madrid Field Study

Summer Session I (Spanish; 200-level; 1 credit)

This field study course is designed to optimize the benefits of the Madrid tour by providing a solid historic and artistic base for studies of Spanish language and culture. The point of departure for the course will be the sites visited on the four-day tour of Madrid and surroundings. Requirements include pre-departure readings, a daily journal of the tour, completion of a comprehensive study guide and a final exam which will be given at the program site. The tour will be given in English. The written work may be done in English or Spanish and it must be handed in before the final exam. There is an additional fee of $750 to help pay for transportation, entrance fees, guides, lodging and some meals.

Mindfulness and Mindfulness-Based Intervention

Summer Session II (Psychology; 300-level; 3 credits)

Mindfulness meditation and other similar contemplative practices have garnered significant attention from both scholars and practitioners in the past 15 years, especially as it relates to using mindfulness to treat a myriad of psychosocial concerns. This course will introduce students to the concept of mindfulness meditation, specifically as it relates to health, psychology, and other applications through both didactic and experiential learning. Students will study the varied applications of mindfulness-based interventions with special attention given to psychopathology. Students will also be asked to cultivate their own practice of daily meditation/contemplative exercises while also being led by the instructor on various contemplative exercises.

Spain Today

Summer Session II (Spanish; 300-level; 1 credit)

This course deals with Spain's history from the 1898 war, in which Spain lost most of its remaining empire, to the present. Themes in politcal, economic, social, and cultural history will elucidate the profound changes that Spain has undergone in the last century. Special attention will be paid to the Spanish Civil War, the Franco regime, the post-Franco transition to democracy, and Spain's integration into the European Union. Taught in Spanish. (Session II)

Also, part of the class is utilized for selected readings, discussion and vocabulary building. Prerequisite: four semesters of college Spanish. Taught in Spanish.

A course that complements the development of linguistic skills emphasizing the oral mode of the Spanish language. It aims to improve students' ability to maintain a sustained monologue as well as oral interactions.

Spanish Culture and Civilization

Summer Session I (Spanish; 300-level; 1 credit)

In this general civilization course, the customs and lifestyles of the Spanish will be studied, both in their historical perspectives as well as in the present. There is also a general discussion of the most important geographic, historical, social, economic, and artistic aspects of Spain, as well as of the most outstanding individuals in each area. Prerequisite: four semesters of college Spanish. Taught in Spanish.

Surfing

Summer Session I (Recreation / Physical Education; 100-level; 1 credit)
Summer Session II (Recreation / Physical Education; 100-level; 1 credit)

This class is co-produced by USAC and “Bluemotion Surf and Bodyboard Academy”. There will be 3 two-hour sessions per week for a 5 week period. “Bluemotion” will provide the needed equipment and insurance, as well as showers and a locker room.

The order of the activities on the syllabus may be subject to changes for reasons beyond our control, such as inclement weather, very big waves, etc.

Topics in Spanish Culture

Summer Session I (Spanish; 300-level; 3 credits)

This innovative course will combine classroom learning with a field study experience to make Spanish culture come alive for the students. The traditional study of Spanish history, culture and art will be complemented by visits to the historical cities of Segovia and Toledo, the Escorial and Valley of the Fallen as well as the Prado Museum. Artistic, political, historical and cultural events will be analyzed and interrelated for a complex and complete vision of the greatness of Spain. In Session I this course will be comprised of the Madrid Tour Field Study, Contemporary Spanish Art and Spanish Culture and Civilization. This 3-credit course may only be taken in addition to another 3-credit course in Spanish Language, European or Cultural Studies. Taught in Spanish.

Twentieth-Century and Contemporary Spanish Poetry

Summer Session II (Spanish; 400-level; 3 credits)

A study of the most important authors and movements from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, including Rubén Darío, Antonio Machado, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillén, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda, Miguel Hernández and more. Prerequisite: six semesters of college Spanish. Taught in Spanish.
