Lisbon Courses – 2022 Summer Session I

Studying abroad can be a more meaningful and invigorating learning experience than at home—both inside and outside of the classroom. You may be more curious and alert than you usually are so use this heightened energy to enhance your studies as well as your cultural and geographical explorations. You may also encounter different teaching styles and course processes; be prepared to adapt and to learn.

Academics

Students can choose from a range of undergraduate courses taught in English at the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa (UCP). Courses are 6 ECTS which equates to 3 U.S. semester credits.

Summer Session 1 (June)

  • Elementary and Intermediate Portuguese Language (Advanced levels available upon request)
  • Portuguese Society & Culture
  • Political Economy of EU Integration: Portugal in Comparative Perspective
  • Colonial and Post-Colonial Issues in the Lusophone World
  • Portuguese Film

Summer Session 2 (July)

  • Elementary and Intermediate Portuguese Language (Advanced levels available upon request)
  • Portuguese History & Culture
  • Transnational Law

Summer Academic Strategy & Leadership module

This module is offered during summer session 2 for a total of 3-6 U.S. semester credits. This must be taken alongside another course offered in session 2. It's comprised of the following courses:

Option #1, 3 credits:

  • Sustainable Leadership & Business Strategy and Analysis (first two weeks of July)

Option #2, 6 credits:

  • Sustainable Leadership & Business Strategy and Analysis (first two weeks of July)
  • Intensive Portuguese Language (last two weeks in July)

Service Learning and Internships

Service learning and internships are only available to students participating in both summer session 1 &2. UCP is especially strong in communication and culture studies and has many links with media organizations, arts organizations, and non-profits. They also have a robust social work program where students are required to engage in service learning opportunities.

Internship options:

  • 20 hrs/week (8 weeks) = 6 ECTS / 3 U.S. semester credits
  • 40 hrs/week (8 weeks) = 12 ECTS / 6 U.S. semester credits

Service learning options:

  • 20 or 40 hours/week (8 weeks).
