Studying abroad can be a more meaningful and invigorating learning experience than at home—both inside and outside of the classroom. You may be more curious and alert than you usually are so use this heightened energy to enhance your studies as well as your cultural and geographical explorations. You may also encounter different teaching styles and course processes; be prepared to adapt and to learn.

Academics

USAC’s partnership with The Hague University of Applied Science’s Faculty of Management and Organization (THUAS) provides you with an array of academic offerings taught in English. You may choose from courses offered in the European Studies programme, including the following disciplines: Business Management; Cultural and Social Studies; Law, Politics, and Administration; Modern Foreign Languages; and Special Projects. A full credit load for a semester at THUAS is typically 24-30 ECTS (12-15 U.S. credits). The maximum course load students may take is 40 ECTS (20 U.S. credits). Courses are subject to availability and approval of prerequisites which are determined by the host university.

All USAC students are required to take an Introduction to Dutch Culture and Society course, worth 2 ECTS (1 U.S. credit). This course provides a strong foundation for the study abroad experience and gives students the opportunity to engage in hands-on, student-led, project-based learning.

Course Required for Study Abroad Students

Introduction to Dutch Culture and Society: This course is designed to help students get to know the Netherlands, its people, its culture, and its history. A variety of themes related to Dutch culture and society will be covered through lectures, written assignments, film, and art. This course is intended to help students become aware of the similarities and differences between Dutch culture and their own culture, while encouraging an openness to learn from cultural differences.

    Other Academic Opportunities

The Hague Summit +20: This project-based course introduces students to arguably one of the most urgent questions of 21st century modern society—how to sustain an acceptable level of wealth for over seven billion people on our finite planet. Guest lectures, group work, self-study, and individual research will combine to expose students to the concept of sustainable development and to develop an appreciation of the difficulty of international cross-stakeholder decision making. The Hague Summit +20 is usually offered during the fall semester only, and students will earn 5 ECTS (2.5 U.S. credits) upon successful completion.
