Service Learning courses for credit are available in Accra, Ghana and Alicante, Spain. Projects and opportunities vary, but may include rural exposure programs and overnight camps in local villages to educate disadvantaged children as well as work in refugee camps and advocacy and awareness programs. You will also be introduced to topics such as social services, HIV/AIDS, deviance and correctional services, poverty faced by children, and women’s rights. Participating in service learning differs from volunteering in that there is a conceptual component that will be addressed in a traditional classroom setting and that is then complemented by experiential learning in the community through various projects. Service learning while abroad is a great way to become more familiar and involved in the host culture, and to make a difference regarding some of the challenges that the local community may be facing.
